Day Five
Fort Sumter, South Carolina
Fort Sumter, though seen towards the end of our trip, was the very beginning of the Civil War. U.S. Major Robert Anderson had Union troops in Fort Sumter, starting in December, 1860. General P.G.T. Beauregard, in command of the Confederate forces around Charleston Harbor, cut off all supplies to the fort, and conditions in the fort grew dire as the Union soldiers rushed to complete the installation of additional guns. Anderson was short of men, food, and supplies. In April, 1861, Beauregard opened fire on the Union garrison holding Fort Sumter. The Union Army was forced to evacuate after 34 hours of bombardment, but no lives were lost during the actual battle.
We knew from the beginning that this was a place that we wanted to visit. It was where the Civil War had it's start, and it was important to us that we saw where that happened. To think that a war that lasted four years, a war that produced an estimated over 620,000 casualties, started at this fort is hard to grasp.

Columbia, NC
The city of Columbia was an important Confederate political and supply center city. It can be considered a vital headquarter for the South. The city was burned and destroyed by Union forces under Sherman.
Columbia as a city had nice beaches that we wanted to relax at. Since, we had been traveling and visiting so many sites we wanted to relax. Apart from that, the city itself was very historical, instead of choosing a specific site to visit we decided to tour the city valuable to the Confederacy. This was the last stop of our day. We traveled a total of about 532 miles in this day.
